Just get a screw driver. Careful when you're pulling the chewed tape off the heads.

You will need to remove the screws that are holding the metal shell on. As I have been taught to do in electronics class you will be able to take the tape out easier if you find the engagement belt.
on the older machines there is a belt and motor that moves the tape and another for the rest of the system that engages the tape around the tape heads. On the newer ones there is one.
Find which way this belt will travel and move it to release the tension on the arms that tighten the tape. Both of these arms look similar. Also, there is also a rubber covered roller that pushes the tape against the capstan. this has to be released also.
When the tape is disengaged from the tape drive system go back to the belt (if on a newer machine) that moved the tension arms and turn it again in the same direction and the tape will com up and out. On an older machine the other belt drives the tape elevator.
When the tape is out turn it on end, press the catch and release the tape cover door. Holding this open take a Phillips screwdriver and slide it into the bottom of the tape. this frees up the tape reels, allowing you to rewind it.
Put the cover back on and take it to a repair technician to fix it. Remember though, only do this if the recorder is not under warranty.

Gosh, some of those answers are just wasting your time.
Unplug power cord from wall FIRST. Take the cover off (there should be two screws on each side). There may be a couple screws on the back depending on model.
Take cover off and look at the tape and the transport unit. Gently see if you can pull the tape up and off the transport. Hopefully you can get the tape out. Problem is when you put it all back together, it may do the same thing. If so, junk it and buy a new one.
Good luck!

Make sure it is disconected from the mains then unscrew the case (underneath/back or sides depending on model)that should give you access to the entangled tape, gently remove the tape and dont use it again,if it keeps on entangling the tape's as some do"(if it has done it once it's bound to do it again with your cherished tapes) then buy a dvd recorder (they are very cheap these days) "transfer all your tapes onto dvd and bin the vhs"hope i have been of some help.

You today supply the lady the tape - and you tell the police - and you tell the lady which you have informed the police too. You have been very incorrect to communicate to the rapist approximately it and you have probably ruined the fingerprints on the tape of the guy who actual filmed the form. Why that guy or woman could supply the tape to you and to not the lady in contact or the rapist is complicated. Why have been you meant to maintain the tape risk-free? so as that guy or woman could blackmail one or the two considered one of them possibly? This guy or woman has in contact you in a severe crime and the faster you tell the police (and warn the lady) the extra effective. What are you going to do if she's have been given an STD or is pregnant? Why do you have confidence the words of a rapist? Get your self clean of this by way of telling the police soonest.

i'd write it off personally, you could mess about and get it out, but the chances are that the tape is damaged anyway now, and the recorder could easily eat the next tape you put in it too.

Take the to poff and carefully unwind all the tape. If you don't want to void the warranty (if it hasn't already expired) bring it to an electronics repair shop.
