Whoever recommended The Burger Joint probably has never been there. The place is tiny. There is no seating for eight people together and they would never let you linger. They make excellent burgers, but you usually have to wait for seating, serve yourself and get out of there in a hurry to make room for the people who are waiting to sit down. This would be a very poor choice.
The Joshua Tree on West 46th Street and Ninth Avenue can accomodate a table for eight. On Saturday afternoons, they serve brunch. The wait staff is very friendly (mostly young women from Ireland). The lobster special is a great deal and they have very rich gooey desserts. You might even be lucky enough to get a large table upstairs at the window.

Another restaurant with that you should consider is Costa Del Sol on the corner of 50th and Ninth Avenue- they can accomodate a large table and they never rush you. The food's
good and the portions are very generous.

If you are going to be there in June you might want to try the Boat House in Central Park. Yes, it's safe to go into the park. It's not always easy to get a seating for 8 people, but on a Saturday it might be easier as people are already leaving town. For midtown in the 50's there's a cute diner, Ellen's Stardust. Also nice, on east and westside is Sarabeth's, does a nice brunch and lunch. For big parties might try Merchants on 1st in the low 60's.

Depends on your version of casual, but two of my all time favorites are Broome St. Bar, and Aqua Grill.Broome St, has an open pub feel with stella on tap and a great people watching windows, and delicious burgers served in pita pockets..not to mention the owner is a riot.
Aqua grill, a little more upscale casual, WONDERFUL food and atmoshere, great oyster bar..but if you can, especially in June, reserve a table outside. Broome St, you'd have to look up, Aqua Grill is 212-274-0505 . Enjoy, really no matter what you choose, its NYC, that in itself is fabulous....as long as you have reservations(:

Gotham, down in the village, it is normally big cash, but for lunch they have a prefix that is only 25, and you get a full 3 course meal
for dinner that place ran me around 190 before tip and tax, but for lunch 25 a peice is a crazy good deal, I go as often as I can
