When reading people's replies, do you only rate the answers you agree with as a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down"? And do you even stop to think for a minute on what the person has said, or just rate the answer because you won't be swayed in what you have grown up believing in all your life, not giving them a chance by taking time out and seeing things from a different perspective?

Notice that many people give knee-jerk, silly answers that imply that they didn't read the question, nor are they trying to give an honest answer. For example, someone asked a question about the doctrine of the trinity and how it related to some sayings of Jesus, and a lot of non-christians chimed in with a one sentence blurb that said something to the effect, "look at the stupid answers that Christians give", or something similar. No attempt to answer the question (even a sceptic could at least give a thoughtful answer as to why he was a sceptic), nor could it be considered to a clever attempt to be funny, either, because the remarks were just a childish attempt to mock people who believe differently than they do.

If someone puts no effort into an answer, then why not give him a thumbs down? Unless the question itself implies that the questioner was not serious -- but even a truely funny response requires some effort.

I would have to agree with some of the opinions set forth here....I do not believe that by only quoting Bible excerpts you can answer any question. I appreciate people who take the time to think the question through (as I try to do that, as well), and answer to the best of their knowledge and abilities.

I believe this place exists because people want to know how others think, they want to hear their take on things, not listen to dry, impersonal discourses.

By formation, I always stop and try to think what that answer meant, what that person's background may be, I try to understand their thinking process. I always try to challenge myself with those different perspectives.

I do not give "thumbs down" because it would not help someone change - and besides, who am I to judge them?

I would love to give a lot more "thumbs up", though. :)

Far too many people rate on agreement -- thumbs up for agree, thumbs down for disagree.

I rate on two different matters -- tolerance/open-mindedness and thoughtfulness.

If an answer is both courteous and well thought out, I'll give it a thumbs up. If it's courteous but not so thought out, I'll usually skip it, same for not courteous but well thought out (though in five months, I've never seen this happen -- the folk who can think seem to be polite too). If it's rude and intellectually lazy, instant thumbs down.

When I answer a question, I also read the other answers. I also read answers to questions that I find interesting, but don't answer myself. I give thumbs up for well thought out answers, not just those with whom I agree. I seldom give a thumbs down.

Yes. If I don't agree, I give a Thumbs Down. I get them all the Time, because I am a Conservative Christian ! So why shouldn't I ?

I usually only rate exceptional answers, either exceptionally insightful and intelligent or exceptionally dumb and insulting. And anyone attacking the questioner on a personal level always gets a bad rating.
Debating the question is not an attack. That's the fun part of this forum.

I don't rate answers, I just give answers.
The truth is never popular. I don't give any credence to the ratings, as I have gotten thumbs down on HITLER IS A BAD MAN, DON"T BE CRUEL TO ANIMALS and FEED THE BABIES.

Yes, I rate thumbs up when they answer as I would. I don't like to be swayed. I can never admit especially to myself that I could be wrong. That would be UN-SOUTHERN!

I really couldn't care less. The only things I give any ratings to are long bible quotes, when the person asking the question gets absolutely no answer from it.
