Contact a local Army recruiter and explain your situation to them. They will know what can be done. I know there are non citizens in the Army, but not sure how they ended up there.

I wanted to join the National Guard and I was contacted by a recruiter.

I am an immigrant and I came to America 7 years ago from India. So the recruiter was going through his stuff and all went well till he inquired about the 551 (Legal Resident) stamp that I must have on my passport.

See, you have to be either a US Citizen OR be a Legal Resident (greencard holder) to serve in any branch of the armed forces.

Sadly, my classification as an immigrant prevented me from getting into the Guard and serve the country which granted me so many oppurtunities.

But the recruiter told me that if I do get me greencard, I can join any branch in the armed forces as a Legal Resident BUT I will stay as an ordinary recruit/enlistee till I get citizenship. That means I can't advance and get promoted to higher roles as an officer.

So, if possible do what you have to do to get citizenship. I am still an immigrant and I don't have my greencard. I am working on it. I hope it works out.

Hopefully, everything works out for you!

well, if you are a legal resident, you can enlist into one of the medical fields. then after you obtain your citizenship, if you already have the crednetials, you can apply to cross over to the Officer ranks.

otherwise, you not only must be a citizen but also have your Degree in hand ..from a college or university that is recognized by the military. Not all foreign medical schools are, for instance.

Speak to an Army Recruiter--one need not be a U.S. citizen to join the U.S. Armed Services...only a legal resident/immigrant. You can also find some information and answers to some basic questions at http://secure.military.com/Recruiting/page1.do?ESRC=ggl_rec_armydvd_content.kw

I knew a lot of human beings who won their citizenship together as in only verify along with your recruiter for all required documentation and because there are a number of decrease backs the recruiters might p.c. a citizen over choosing you.

If you join the army it will make citizenship an easy process because I was told if I joined the army I would get US citizenship. I don't see why it would be different for you.

You should contact your local recruiter if you live here in the United States. I know that in Puerto Rico you can join the US Army from there. It really depends on where you live. Do you live in the states.
