Do intervals of fast/slow and/or walk/run. You can also increase and decrease the grade (uphill or downhill).
Walk at a comfortable pace to warm up then speed it up to a very fast walk for 5 minutes. Take it back down (but not slow) and repeat.
Walk for 3 minutes and run for 2 minutes. Repeat.
Always remember to warm up and cool down.

That depends on how old you are, if you're overweight, how much you're over weight, are you exercised already?? It's not an easy answer, because there are too many variables. The idea of a treadmill is to get lots of exercise, so that you're burning calories. The treadmill stays put in your home or the gym, so you're not outside running and jumping with the little rabbits and doggies to get your exercise. Some people usually try to walk or jog 30 minutes daily. that keeps them exercised, keeps their metabolism up so that they can burn off the calories, also exercising gives you more energy. The younger you are, the easier it is to exercise, because the body is new and able to move easier......unless you are very overweight, then it's obviously much harder to move. Yes, a treadmill does work, but it's a regular part of your life. Some people prefer treadmill so they don't have to go outside to walk or jog, but some prefer to be outside in the wonderful outdoors and neighborhood, rather than stuck inside the house. It can be a double benefit if you use a treadmill. Many people read books or watch their favorite tv shows while doing the treadmill. So your time is double-spent, not just sitting watching or reading. With any exercise program, it is very good to modify your eating habits, too, so that you're not eating more cakes or desserts when you get hungrier from all the exercise. So as you lower your caloric intake, and exercise to use up more calories, your body will SLOWLY adjust to a thinner you. But it definitely isn't quick. But it's a good steady way to help improve your health and your fitness.

That depends on what you're using it for...
To lose fat it would be an interval based training workout where you going really fast and do it for 1 minute than rest for 2 minutes by going at a moderate pace and repeating that for 3-4 times of course with a warmup and cool down included.
And then if you're training for a marathon or just want to build up your heart then your typical 30-40 min jog on the treadmill at 75% of your heart rate max should be fine.
