That stat is a bit off. Actually, atheists are hard to count. It depends on how you define "atheist". The ARIS poll showed the percentage of the population that considers itself "secular" to be about 10%. ("Somewhat secular" was 6%). In the same poll, the percentage that called themselves "atheist" was 0.4%. The reason for the discrepancy probably has to do with how the word "atheist" has been made a derogatory term. There are many others who don't believe a god exists, but don't want to come up and label themselves "atheist". ("agnostic" was 0.5%) Also, a lot of people who don't believe a god exists still identify with a religion culturally, i.e. Jewish by culture, but not believing a god exists.

This makes such determinations hard to really establish.

ADMITTED atheists make up 1% of the population. It's got a stigma attached to it, so people are often less likely to designate themselves as "athiest". And believers are likely worried because as science advances more people switch to the atheist "camp" (for lack of better word).

CNN works for the American Government, so I don't think anything they say is written in stone. Where did they take the poll, in the Bible belt, or did they just poll the "moral" majority? We all know how polls and elections can be manipulated to make the outcome be in thier favor.

According to the CIA:

Protestant 52%, Roman Catholic 24%, Mormon 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 1%, other 10%, none 10% (2002 est.)

Was this CNN... or faux news?

Well, anything approaching 1% of Americans would still be 3 million. That's a lot of people. Even if it was one half of a percent, that would still be over a million. That's probably too many for any evangelist to accept. Understand?
