Design largely depends on the function we intend to achieve.
So what is your arm suppose to do. What is its function and range of motions?

The reason for air powered arm would be speed or explosive environment. Typically. Hard to envision without more detail. Next question would be how much accuracy do you need? Servo controled motors would give you micron control of position. Hydraulics maybe used if you have an availble hydraulics skid and can use the power. Also the air said that it will promote motion. Is this exclusively air or not?

If I was a kid doing a science project, I would "FIND" (wink) me a pneumatic screen door closer or one of those little pneumatic arms on camper shell hatches. Then I would remove the adjusting screw at the end and use that port to input air with my bike pump and a valve (not necessary) to bleed the air off. NOW! you got the makin's of a robot arm and it's spring return!! TOO' BOOT.

Have fun kids
