I recently had a baby.(8 months ago) Dr. said i owed 400 - my part, which i paid b/4 birth. Year end statement says Patient (me) paid 725 out of pocket. After my insurance has paid and all is well, the statement also says i have a credit of 586 on my acct. Who is to receive the overage paid to the dr. and why havent they contacted me regarding an overage -- I surely would have gotten a bill by now. (found this out when asking for info to file/itemize taxes). How do I go about settling account to a zero balance.

YOU receive any overpayments.

You have to contact the billing office to see about getting a refund check.

Firstly, the doctor should not have charged you until your insurance paid. But, they do what they want.... *sigh*

Find your EOBs for the claim the doctor filed to your insurance company. Call the doctor's billing office. Tell them you think you overpaid them for your delivery. If they start to give you any trouble at all, tell them you paid $400, but your EOB says you should have only paid $186. Offer to supply them with a copy. They should simply re-post the money correctly to your account and generate a refund. If they argue, ask to speak with someone else... the office manager, someone who has more experience, etc. The explanation of benefits, along with any canceled checks or receipts you have from the doctor's office should be all you need to prove they owe you a refund. Good luck

You must absolutely speak to the office manager regarding this issue. It is the doctor's/practice's responsibility to determine where the over payments came from and refund it. You must insist that they explain all the payments and charges to you. In doing that, they should/must be able to explain who the refund(s) for the overpayment is going to. You have every right to insist that they refund your money ASAP. Afterall, they make you pay the minute you walk in the door.

the insurance company always pays their claim based on what the allowable charge is for the service that was provided, minus any money you may be required to pay, like deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance. If the doctor was overpaid, they overestimated the amount that you would be required to pay.

The doctor's office owes you a refund.
