"Puppy" has most of the information for which you are probably looking. If you are buying batteries on-line, be prepared for vendors/mfrs. outside of North America which may use other nomenclature--Micro (AAA) and Mignon (AA) in Germany, for example. Other sizes have other strengths.

They are a method of identifying appropriate size 1.5v batteries for your appliance.

AAA are the the smallest standard "pencil" batteries.

AA is the next size up.
