Besides needing the calcium it may be that your Finches are still young! It's perfectly normal for the first few batches a hen lays to get eaten. If it continues past the first three rounds of layings then you may have birds that have become accustomed to eating their eggs and if you want chicks you would need to move the eggs to an incubator. Finches that are old enough and healthy enough to deal with fledglings don't normally eat eggs whether the eggs are fertile or not!

Generally they will eat their own eggs when they have a lack of calcium in their diet. If they are still eating their eggs after you have improved their diet I'm afraid it is because it has become a habit. Hope all goes well.

I think I have an answer. If you touched the eggs or if someone else did then, the parents will not care for them. Not only does finches do this but other animals do. Mostly just in small animals, because they are very afraid.

it is natural for them to eat it, specially the male ones and those not raised in the wild as they are not used to breeding. to avoid it, upon laying you remove the male first. the male eats it almost automatically once its on the mouth and as finches are not mouthbreeders (is that the right term? sorry i forgot, but its the one that hatch their eggs in their mouths, though) they have no reason to put it in their mouth except for feeding. while the female may "play" with the eggs in her mouth to sort of cleanse them from the jelly like extra thing they have upon hatching. then remove, VERY carefully, the eggs. it is also good to put a sort of pot in the tank before spawning. the fish regard this as their nest, dont know why but they do. well. better luck next time.

There is something your birds need, like oyster shells. You can buy them to mix with their food. You can call a local pet store also or write to a Zoo and ask them.
