Any time a parent can't manage their child they rush them to the doctor, rattle off all the things that bother them about their child, and then ask "Does he/she have a disorder (they are crossing their fingers at this point hoping the doc says,"Sure, you'r kid is screwed up and it's not your fault at all.") and what can you give him/her to make him/her better?" Never mind the fact that most people care very little for discipline any more simply because it might damage their ever so fragile egos, never mind the kids spend more time with caretakers then parents, never mind the kid is probably just spoiled beyond belief because it's easier to give in then stand your ground.

Just to clarify I am not talking about the select few who actually do have chemical imbalances, the ones who go thru all types of physical tests to determine what's wrong, or the people who have honestly tried being parents.

I now repeat my question:

Why is our society so set on getting our kids stoned?

I obtain my information from personal experience. I have a child who can be terribly difficult at times. He is currently going through some stuff do to custody issues which I am currently trying to resolve. I trie to instill a sense of self-worth and responsibility in my children while my ex tells our son he has no responsibility until he turns 18. Pretty much what ever I say he says I am wrong. My son is in therapy due to all of this. Before he began therapy he had to sit down w/a psych for all of 10 mins who determined he has adhd. Never mind my son is going through quite a lot for his age. I declined the medical route for a more hands on therapeutic one. I also have an acquaintance whose child was also diagnosed adhd and accepted the meds. Now every time her child so much as has an opinion she shoves the pills down her throat to put her to sleep. I also know of someone who has tried everything and only uses the meds to help his child pay attention in class.

Simple. We've been programmed for immediate gratification over the years (TV plays a key role in this). People don't want to hear that it's going to take a concerted effort and they're going to have to take some time out of their busy day and spend some time with their kids in order to straighten them out. Thankfully, not all of us subscribe to such nonsense and are still using the tried and true old fashioned method of raising our kids.... HANDS ON.

You can thank your government for that. The schools are now sending children left and right to be evaluated for AD/HD because they are "acting like children." We live in a society that is so screwed up and as long as you give in and go along with it, then things won't improve. My child was sent to be evaluated. We were sent to a place that mainly dealt with drugs and alcohol, needless to say that place didn't help. My son doesn't have ADHD and is doing very good in school. Turns out I lived in an "upscale" area where the schools follow a different method of teaching. Geometry in first grade. I have never heard of such crap in all my life. As long as parents give in to the idea that there is something wrong with their child because he/she is hyper, then this society will continue to be screwed up. I don't believe in medicating my children and I always get a second and third opinion after visiting any doctor for any reason. It's getting to the point where you can't even have a "bad" day without someone saying you need medication for that. May GOD help us all. Thank you.

Well for one, I think I would agree with you to a certain extent. I feel kind of uneasy when I go to the doctor and the only solution they have for me is to take some kind of pill that I don't know how it works in the body. I don't think it's really society's wanting us to take these pills, however. If you are referring to psychoactive drugs, I believe the reason why pills are given out left and right is that the mind is very mysterious and there are still a lot of questions about how the brain works. Thus, we don't really have any solutions but the ones we have made progress towards: namely this is in the field of biochemistry. In short, we don't really have any other options in helping mental patients cope with their illnesses other than giving them these pills. Sure it may seem to be somewhat shady or disconcerting that all mental illnesses must be treated with some kind of pill, but what other options do we have? This "solution" to treat mental patients with various psychoactive drugs is also - dare I say it - ENCOURAGING for people because drugs are something concrete and it's different from other methods of coping such as seeing a therapist. Well, I focused in on the psychological usage of pills, but to be more general, I think society relies on pills because people are determined to change something about their lives and the body's chemistry is the only thing we can alter so that these expectations are met. For instance, a good number of high school athletes will take drugs like Creoltene (I don't know how to spell it) or other various steroids because they WANT to gain more muscle mass. And there is no FASTER way to achieve the kind of results that these drugs will offer... That is just one example, but maybe a more philosophical answer to your question is that people in modern times are becoming more and more concerned about their bodies, and with new advances in bio-technology, the only way that these people will be able to see the changes they want to their bodies is by trusting what medical experts prescribe to those people... In summary, the choice as a parent is up to you to make of whether your child should be hopped up on meds, but in some instances, your child really does need that medication. e.g. If you're getting a tooth removed, you're in for a very painful experience you don't take some kind of numbing agent such as Vicodin or Percossets... Hope my answer helps :)

Because every other commercial on the television is from a major pharmaceutical company touting some sort of drug. There are drugs for every little thing, and from the sounds of it no matter what is bothering you all you have to do is run to the doctor and tell him you saw an ad on TV for hexachloromorphine and you want some. The ingrained answer to every little complaint or ailment is to pop some pills.

Besides, if the kid is wailing and squalling it is easier to force a bunch of his meds down his throat and drug the kid out of his mind than it is to actually be a real parent and comfort the kid and give him love and affection.

The Rolling Stones talking about this decades ago in "Mother's Little Helper".

Several reasons.

#1 - we live in a drug society where we have the expectation that there is a drug for anything and everything that ails us.

#2 - we are blasted daily with ads for drug products promoting the same idea as #1 above.

#3 -It takes time to learn how to properly parent a child, and to be consistent at it. Many parents are so busy dong other things that they do not invest the time necessary. Therefore, they look for the quick fix for their child's unacceptable behavior instead of recognizing that the kid's behavior problems are a product of bad parenting.

Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house. How can you speak for society? Do you have children? Do you work with children and families? Too many people sit on the opposite side and tell others what they should/should not do. Where do you get your information?

properly, I study a psychology/sociology mag once that stated this very difficulty. Its been 2 years, so i do not keep in ideas or maybe understand if i will discover the link to it. in reality what it reported, change into that the reason the final public of human beings choose how sturdy someone is through their visual charm, and why someone needs to pass out with (and ultimately marry and performance children) is because alluring human beings stay more effective powerful. Now, allow me clarify this somewhat. What it potential, is that 2 human beings of equivalent potential and potential, might want to collectively survive in existence, even as given the situations, yet when one of them is grotesque and the different is taken into consideration alluring, then the stunning one will be regularly commonplace. also, all people is in touch in alluring human beings because in the adventure that they are in a position to have children with that individual, then the potential of 1 of their children being alluring, are extreme. subsequently, the newborn will be dealt with more effective powerful in existence because he seems more effective powerful. Now, it really is uncomplicated human fundamentals. the most uncomplicated purpose of guy (human this is) is to stay and reproduce, so human beings do in spite of it takes to insure that their children have the most perfect danger at surviving. So if alluring all people is dealt with more effective powerful, then someone might want to pick to have an alluring newborn, so as that their danger of residing is larger. time previous regulation, human beings do not forget that what someone is like on the exterior, might want to no longer extremely practice how they're interior the interior, subsequently we are saying "its no longer whats on the exterior that counts, yet whats interior the interior". in spite of the undeniable fact that, the actual reality of the count number is that those with the sturdy seems, will be dealt with more effective powerful in society. also, no count number how troublesome we are saying we shouldn't choose human beings by potential of seems, all of us choose human beings by potential of their seems, era. some try this more effective than others in spite of the undeniable fact that, even as others do it decrease than others. Its no longer something to be ashamed about, because its human nature. end: Judging human beings by potential of seems is human nature. always have, and always will.
