Or does it have to be a black and white issue as people in general seem to believe. I think it IS possible to get your old self back as it were without having to give drink up. I dont have experience with drugs but I believe thats a definite no no, apart from canabis which I feel should be legalised, even though I dont smoke. Who agrees?

Alcoholism and other addictions are considered a disease that can never be cured, only managed. That, I suspect, is why it is generally believed that the object of the addiction must be given up completely.

As far as getting your self-control back after an addiciton, I would guess your odds depend on the object of the addiction and the degree of your addiction.

The quiet alcoholic who never actually allowed themselves to be completely derailed may be able to control himself, whereas the alcoholic who hit rock bottom and did a stint in rehab may never be able to drink again.

What would be interesting to know is, what goes through a recovering addict's mind when they're exposed to the object of their addiction again, and what do they think and feel when they have their first drink (or whatever) after being away from it? How do they get drawn back in, as so many do?

Yes, you can get self control back, but it is a long, hard, painful mental and physical struggle, but you can and do come out of it stronger. You have to stop focusing on your own agony and immerse yourself in something anything other than yourself regardless of how mundane it may be. You need the help of the Lord. A 12-step program is essential. At some point an abuser has to decide whether they are going to quit their habit or just keep on and die. I believe anything that alters or numbs thoughts should be avoided.

Which has greater integrity, a Christian or a canines? a minimum of the canines does not insult an entire inhabitants based on the strikes of few. in actuality, a canines might lick them. Edit: we'd only be proving you good if we've been commenting in keeping with a non secular aimed question as adversarial to a query DIRECTED at atheists. I dare you to respond to me and prepare which you *are not* a thoroughly imbecile and rather have something well worth together as to assert yet you do no longer. and you're a coward that believes making exciting of folk with greater intelligence than you is a manner of compensating on your loss of a innovations and balls.

yeS, based on your income you can budget yourself so to be able to buy and do the quantity of drugs you just need. if you find yourself spending more & more money on drugs than you can afford, take a walk or spend some time with an activity, this is especially good when you spend time with older people. you can discuss the good ole daz when drugs where legal and how they were able to not get so hooked that they over spend their paycheck. ask them how bummed out they were when prohibition came to be. ask them how bummed out they were when coca-cola became just a drink.
best thing to do is to tell yourself how much better it is to buy techno-gadgets and to go into debt for that as well, because the money for those things is better spoend and the debt incured is so illustrious.

I got myself back (and better) after an ongoing battle with heroin and crack - of course I can't have it 'now and then' otherwise I'd become addicted again! I'm certain it's true for alcoholics too, surely they'd just fall back in love with their drug of choice and be back to square one! Addiction follows the reliable pattern of an individual repating a process again and again - it has to be broken to be overcome.
