I have been told it's 6-9 months but I thought it was 6 weeks?

About 12 months if you want to be certain of finding the right one... I first started looking in May 2005, I chose one in June 2005, I had my first fitting in September 2005, my second fitting in December 2005, my third fitting 2 weeks before my wedding, and my wedding day on June 3rd 2006! xx

I agree 6 - 9 months about right. If you order too soon and new designs arrive in the shops you may regret it. Don't worry if the wedding is close. My daughter still hasn't got her dress and being married in July this year (only decided at Christmas) and we are still on the look. Without exception despite overhearing assistants tell customers 6 months, even 10 months to order when we tell the wedding date they say it isn't really a problem, even with the best of designers. Also if it is a quality salon alterations are done by their own staff and if measured correctly not much should be required.........believe me I'm becoming an expert since this is not my first to be married. I certainly wouldn't particularly recommend waiting as long as my daughter has but beware of ordering too early as it has known for designers to put orders far in advance to one side and forget and for shops to receive the dress and something happen to it. When looking for dress for another daughter we were appalled when in a quality shop she was trying on a gown that had came in for someone else. Naturally we didn't purchase from there!!!

6 weeks is much too close to the wedding to order the dress. Around 9 months would be more appropriate, not to mention safer. Some stores take as long as 5 months to receive the dress once it has been ordered, and once it arrives you have to leave a reasonable time for alterations, which can take another 2 months.
If you have your heart set on a particular dress I would suggest you order it as soon as you can, rush alterations are expensive and sometimes you won't be able to take the dress with you until the day before the wedding. If something goes wrong, you won't have time to fix it.

Depends how much time you've got. Obviously the more time you have the better as regards ordering brand new and allowing for over-run on delivery(and the brand new choice is bigger too of course).

We got married 6weeks after I had my son and I didn't do anything other than book the venue and invite people until I'd had him.

Went to a local boutique (or 6) and finally picked a dress off the rack, had it altered bodice-wise(and she re-attached all the beading down the edges where she'd altered it), fully cleaned, pressed etc in that space of time-and it was at my Mom's for a week prior to the wedding. Oh and I organised 2 bridesmaids dresses(matching-for my 1 yr old daughter and 30yr old friend), the flowers, table dressing, photographer etc in that time too.

So. If you're flapping because you think you've left it late-panic not!!

Oh, and good luck.

Hi im getting married this year and 6-9 months is correct as for somedresses it takes longet for them to come. I found mine and it took 3 months to come but at least i know i have got it. Ive only got to go back and get it fitted and then try it on the week before the wedding. The 6 weeks your thinking of is to have the dress that has come fitted to you. There is no way if your getting you dress from a bridal shop; that you will get it in 6 weeks fitted and all. So if you havent already got one or started looking then i suggest you get ure skates on and start looking as it will be hear before you know it.

most people say 6-9 months, to order and actually recieve your dress, but also take into consideration the fact that you have to find the perfect dress before you order it. I would start 12 months before the wedding. That way you are not rushed and if it comes in way before the wedding it is better than coming in a month after your wedding.

No it definitely isn't 6 weeks, I ordered mined about 8 months before I got married. So between 6-9 months is fine, you need that amount of time so that any alterations can be done to it etc

It depends on the dress and the designer you go with, truthfully, but to be completely safe, you do want to allow at least six months.

Dresses are made when you place the order, and the time to complete will vary depending on designer, and if anything needs to be done custom when the dress is ordered. With my wedding dress, I had an A-line gown with beaded hemline, so it could not be hemmed when it arrived. So I had to be measured, and a new pattern had to be worked to accommodate my measurements before they could make the dress.

After all that, then the dress has to be shipped. Then, once it arrives, you'll probably need at least two fittings (hem, bustling your train, etc.), which will have to be scheduled with a seamstress. The less time you allow, the smaller your margin of error is for something to go wrong.

With my own wedding dress, I ordered it in January (I had an October wedding), and it should have taken 4-5 months to arrive, which would have made it late May to early June. It didn't come in until mid-August. The woman who measured me for my dress was a genius, and my dress came in with a fantastic fit - I only needed two fittings (one to bustle, and one after the bustle was complete to make sure it was okay!).

I hope that helps you.

Order your dress as soon as possible so there is the maximum time for it to be made and fitted etc. It's usually 6-8 months, mine took 5 and a half months then had to be taken in as I lost weight between when it was made and my wedding day.
Good Luck with your wedding!!

Oh, no, 6 weeks is not enough time to order a dress! That's when you have your first fitting. Your dress needs to already be there at that time!

Allow as much time as possible. The dress has to be ordered and custom made (sometimes, usually it's just grabbed off a rack in the warehouse), and shipped. But then if there's a problem, you need to allow enough time for it to be fixed. Three months out to do it, but more time wouldn't hurt at all.
