You know what. I dont think any of these answers are right. Think about it. If the name came from a car the police were driving in the 80's and 90's. Then how come there was a 70's T.V. show calling cops 5-0. It doesn't make sense. Try finding out why the 70's show called themselves hawaii 5-0 and you'll get your answer..

Its because back in the '80s-'90s the police officers used to drive the Ford Mustang 5-0, one of the fastest cars Ford put out. So when you would see a 5-0 mustang the chance that it was a cop was very good. It has just kind of stuck through today.
