Hi there...perhaps what you may be hearing is your cat "purring". Cats purr when they are content, happy, or if very ill and/or dying.

Here's a sound clip of a cat purring:

I've had cats all my life and they have many different sounding meows and purrs.
Right now we have four cats who range in age from one 8 year old, two 6 year olds and an 18 month old.
Every morning when I go into the kitchen to make coffee they all follow me and all meow for their breakfast.
Because they are my cats and I've had them for so long and heard this same sound every morning for years I know what it means.

But do all cats make the same noise when they are hungry, no your cat may ask for food in a different way than ours do.
I don't think the sound comes from their lungs though.

Plus the sound you hear them make when they are breathing in and out is a purr.
All cats purr, and they purr for different reasons...not only because they're happy.
