Just now I noticed a brown mark in my cat's green eye. It's medium sized and is mostly under where the lid is (I saw it when he was staring, wide eyed, at the sun).
Could it be that I just hadn't noticed an existing mark in 6 years?

Or is there any condition that causes staining / discolouring in an adult cat's eye?

It's not 'goo-ing' and he hasn't been in a fight (100% domestic).

Thank you,
Inbaal

Discoloration of the eyes can be caused by illness or infection --same as in humans. As long as your cat isn't blinking frequently or "winking" that eye, then it is probably not serious, though you should ask your vet on your next check-up.

Cats irises are striated (meaning that they have lines and wiggly marks in them because irises are muscles) just like humans, though theirs cover the whole visible area of the eye. It could be just a natural coloration, or a temporary burst capillary (also like humans, only you don't normally notice them in cats because they have no "whites" like us) which isn't serious unless the cat has suffered head trauma recently. Hope this helps! ^__^

My old cat had a brown mark in his eye. The vet said it was an eye condition, but unfortunately I can’t remember what it was called. (The cat was 6 when he got the mark, and he lived for another 13 years. My memory isn’t that good, lol.)

It was a medium brown stain that was actually in the green of his eye.
The stain eventually spread, and we’re pretty sure it sent him blind in one eye.
It didn’t impact his quality, or length, of life though.

You should talk to your vet about it.

my cat Zeus also has a black medium sized dot in her eye but I'm am very familiar with this if you have just noticed this there are a wide spread of worms going around one that even forms in the eye you should get your cat in to the vet asap is it is light to dark brown it is probably a tape worm of sorts keep the cats inside!

The brown speck in your kitties eye is probably a nevus, or freckle/hyper pigmentation of the eye. Humans have them too and they rarely become cancerous. Practically almost too rarly to mention.
