She is a 2 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She has had approximately 5 seasons since she started her periods. She can become quite moody and swollen. And I know she's uncomfortable because she lays differently to usual and responds amazingly to the odd massage!!! Any ideas?!!!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate you taking the time to help. It means a lot. I am going to get her spayed coz there are enough dogs in this world needing a home without adding to it (I must admit I have been in two minds coz of the worry of putting her through surgery) But i guess in the long term it will be better to get it over and done with and save her this misery every 6 months. I just needed a kick up the backside and you have given me it! Thanks guys, big love to you all!

Besides humans, no other animals have menstrual cycles. Majority of mammals, have estrus(heat) cycles. Dogs have heat cycles around every 6 months. But when they are pregnant, they got into heat after giving birth, which is considered backbreeding and hard on the ***** (the technical name of female dogs!).
There aren't dog painkillers for that. Most animals aren't in pure pain during heat.
If you want her to not go through heat cycles, your only suitable option would to spay her.
Shelters/Pounds/ASAPs have low cost spaying/neutering, you should ask your local Shelter/Pound or ASAP about their spaying/neutering program, so she can get spayed. Female dogs in heat are also more likely to escape. And tend to spot blood. Just spay her, that's best for her, and can help prevent cancer of the reproductive system, and prevent any accidental litters from ever happening, and she won't have to go through anymore heat cycles.

If the dog is miserable when it comes into heat then the best thing to do would be is to get the dog spayed. There are things that can given to dogs for pain, but not for being in heat.

Unless she is a breeding dog why don't you just have her neutered and save her the pain and you the trouble. She just has to stay overnight at the vets and will better in a couple of days.

even if you are planning on breeding her, get her spayed. there are already enough pups to go around. besides, spaying reduces the risk of cervical cancer for her

I agree with everyone else. If you aren't going to breed her then get her spayed. But I do think every female dog should have at least one litter. But that is up to you.

Unless you're to breed her, spay her. She'll be much healthier.
