Terrible idea. Clowns are scary and not at all funny. Unless you set them on fire, then they're hilarious. Or run them over, that one cracks me up.
This is a wedding, not a god-damned circus.

Good idea if the reception is in the day and the clown can be outside with the children,or a separate room away from the bride and groom. The day is for the BRIDE not even a clown should take any of her attention.I would ask the couple and get their feed back, but don't be surprised if they say NO.In this day and time they have receptions at night that doesn't include any children at all.

Okay, maybe if you specified a little more, you could get a better answer from all of us. Clowns are for kids parties not weddings. If you have lots of kids at your wedding, hire a jumping castle or a trampoline. Kids love that. A clown, they're clowns, innapropriate to a very serious and joyous event such as a wedding. Bad idea. Save money good idea.

I'm sure it has been done before, but why would you want to? I guess it depends on your reasons, but I don't think a clown would be appropriate at a wedding reception. Save the clown for your first child's birthday party.

It all depends on what the rest of your wedding is like. Maybe you're having a circ de soleil theme with lots of sound and fury plus a few sequinned acrobats and your guests would be prepared for it.
On the other hand, it's hard to imagine one at your typical black-tie reception.

Clowns have always frightened me, is there something else you could do to entertain the children? Weddings are adult oriented, so I know you want something their for them, but I wouldn't choose a clown.

I see I'm not alone in thinking clowns are creepy.
So add another vote for bad idea.

Don't think it is a good idea unless you have lots of kids there and want to keep them amused... Or get a punch and Judy show.. :D

Well, I guess it all depends on what the clown is going to do.
