There aren't any characteristics that say a family is or isn't dysfunctional. Usually if something is going on that isn't a norm in society then a family would be considered dysfunctional. There are some things like Physical, emotional, sexual and verbal abuse, those things make a family dysfunctional. Other than that a family being dysfunctional is in the eye of the beholder. Good luck if you are and try not to let the cycle repeat itself.

Dysfunctional is a family that its members do not know how their role in the family functions. A mother should know what a mother should offer and take over, a sister the same etc.etc. Good communication, cooperation and understanding are the keys.
Don't forget that a family since it consists of a number of persons should run like a well managed.... company, with Love over all.

Not enough communication
Don't sit down together for meals
Parents have no clue where their kids are most the time
Kids stay in trouble at school
When the family is together they do nothing but fight because they have nothing in common & stopped knowing eachother over time.

I think it stems from the way your parents think and act. It certainly did in my family's case. My mother is jealous, insecure, non-believing in her child's innocence in anything she accuses it of. Instills jealousy in her youngest child by singing the praises of her eldest child although she never actually praised the eldest ever, only treated her cruelly. A father who bullies his wife and eldest child mentally. A father who tells his children they must have no other opinions in his house except his - I could go on and on.

I think emotional abuse is on of the strongest signs. People can't live in a house where constant emotions are flying around that are negative
