I have heard it is Rhino3d. It is supposedly is easy to learn and very powerful. I don't know first hand but I asked someone your very same question.

If you have the time and money, either 3dStudioMax or Maya, these are the two big 3d software packages which I see in job adverts all the time.

Depends what you'd like to do, if its more gaming and visual i'd suggest 3dstudio max, there was a free version of it a while ago called gmax i'm not sure if thats still around.
If you're looking towards more engineering systems maybe a program like autoCAD would be more appropriate
