Yes you do. It's called something daft like 'over tile adhesive' any good DIY store will sell it (next to the regular tile adhesive)

There are allot of answers here. Yes you can set new tile over the old, with the same mortar or mastic you would normally use. However, the old tile must be secure. ( no loose tile ). And I would recommend cleaning and etching the old tile with a 50 / 50 blend of muaratic acid and water....

There are many different types of tiles. I'll assume your refering to ceramic tiles. It is best to remove the tile and backerboard to install any new flooring surface. You will receive the best installation that way. If you are brave you may Ardex the existing ceramic floor to smooth out the grout lines and prepare the ceramic tiles surface to receive additional thinset to install ceramic tile over ceramic tile. Remember flex and tile do not get along. If your substrate is flexing under your weight, the tile you install will crack. Also be aware of the transitional doorway from the bath to the hallway could present a challenge. Your refering to an adhesive so I'll assume that perhaps you'd like to install vinyl tiles over existing vinyl tiles or ceramic tiles in the bath. In that case vinyl tiles tolerate flex much more but will conform to whatever surface that they are applied over (even slight patterns can sometimes show through). You will still need to use the adhesive to install the tile but you must prep the surface of the existing tile to receive the adhesive. If you have vinyl, linoleum, or asbestos tiles down now you will need to skim the surface of the tile completely smooth with a cement embossing or latex leveler with a trowel. Also known as a skim coat in the industry. Allow to dry then install tiles with the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. If you choose to remove existing tile for the best installation: For ceramic remove tile, morter, and backer board, for wet bed remove tile and thick layer of cement or mud. For vinyl tile remove tile and 1/4" plywood (leave the 3/4" flooring grade plywood in place and install new 1/4" plywood on top) then install tiles with adhesive and v-notch towel sized according to adhesive instructions.
Good Luck on your project,
Jen

yes you tile over the old tiles but first give it a coat of P V A ..this is a type of glue ..similar to wood glue ..but when you paint it on .its white but dries clear and it gives agreat surface to re tile over anomaly give it a coat the night before ..and another coat before i start as it is going off i apply the adhesive ..then its the notched trowel and away !

Just the normal one will do. Just make sure your tiles are completely dust and grease free, otherwise there will be adhesion problems.

I would remove the old ones - what benefit is there to leaving them on? When you remove the old ones you get a much better surface for tiling on - the tiles will stick better to the wall.
