****I have a serious phobia. I feel like I will be better prepared to deal with it if I can research it and understand what I am really afraid of.
---
Do not cunfuse my fear with Claustrophobia.
---
I realize I have Agoraphobia witch I understand is NOT a fear of open spaces, but really a fear of "not being able to escape a panic attack"
---
To complicate this I also have slight Agateophobia. Fear of becoming insain. (Due to the intense panic I feel"
---
The "Missing Link" for me is my arms. I have a SERIOUS Fear concerning my arms being confined. "Handcuffs, Straight Jacket, etc..."
---
I tried TWICE to get an MRI done. Once in an "open MRI".... I Paniced badly both times. The main reasons I paniced was because my arms couldnt move, and I could'nt "leave" without the technition "allowing" me. In other words, I had to trust them to let me out, but I couldnt trust the most trusted person for a billion dollars.
*****
Thanks in advance people.

There's more than one approach to understanding and treating phobias. Some psychologists/psychiatrists would advise you to search through your past - usually that part of it which you can't easily remember - to see whether you can identify an incident or incidents that led to the fear being implanted; and then they'll use (typically) some kind of talking therapy to help them lose their power. Others will use a kind of conditioning technique, where they don't bother so much with the origins of the phobias but will gradually try to control your reaction by starting with 'miniaturised' exposures to whatever causes your fear - staying with you all the time - and slowly increasing the strength of the exposure until you can stand the whole thing without reacting. Professional opinions are divided as to which method (and there are others, such as hypnosis) works best, but it does seem as if at some point you'd benefit from a spot of skilled help. However I'd suggest - I'm a psychologist - that you do some reflecting on your own first, seeing whether you can identify when and how these fears started; how old were you? can you remember what happened? does anything make them worse or better? and - this is useful - can you imagine what life would be like without them? Can you create a scenario or two in which you move in this world freely and without these fears? Can you talk the scenario out loud or write it down - in the first person ('I'm doing this ...') or in the third person ('Joe's doing this ...' - don't know your name so I'm calling you Joe for the moment).

Onve you've done that, see whether you can use any of the insights the process gives you. It's possible that just going through the process will clear the decks. If not, I'd take yourself to a good counselling psychologist - ask around for recommendations, starting with your doctor, and make sure that you're referred to one who isn't committed to just one approach - and get yourself some good help.

I can assure you that you are *not* going insane. People who go insane usually have no idea that this is happening to them, which is part of the process of becoming insane.

A useful book to read is Emotional Intelligence, by Daniel Goleman. This isn't specifically about phobias, but it does have a great deal to say about the life of the mind - including its peculiar twists and turns, and what happens when we 'flood' with fear (or rage, or any other uncontrollable emotion). I think you'd find that it gives a lot of insights.

Hope you find the road to recovery soon and live a full and happy life.

You are going in depth where it is not needed. The logic patch that is triggered in your brain has to be removed by an emotional shake down .Please fall in love with someone. It does not mean simply sex. No. It means find a proper spot where you converge and project your self and your every feeling. This is the first step towards achieving peace by renewal of your emotions. Then your brain can discard bad logic patches that were developed during a period of depression.

I'm no expert but these all seem to have the common thread of not being in control- fear of not being able to escape, fear of going mad, fear of being restrained. I think you need to work on feeling that the world is a safe place and your assertiveness- the more assertive you are the more you will feel that you will not be "stuck" in situations that you cannot escape.

I think you have a serious problem and Yahoo answers might not be the right place to ask for advice. Go see a shrink that specializes on phobias.
