If you have full costody of the child, you can simply request a name change for the child. Fill out the paperwork and you may hacve to stand before a judge just to explain your reason for wanting to change it and they'll most likely allow it.

Once you have put the fathers last name on the birth certificate the only way to change it is with the father's permission. If the father will not give permission to change it then you have to wait until the child reaches the age of 18.

Under the change of rules in very recent years (can't remember exactly but read it in the last couple of weeks), he automatically got Parental Responsibility by being named on the Birth Certificate. If you ring the Register Office, they will be able to advise you if you can alter the name- I'm pretty sure you will need his permission.
Personally, I wouldn't change it, my kids both have their dads' surnames, and enjoy that bond, even though we are not together anymore. Having your name changes nothing that truly matters.

In a court of law the child is the one With the rights! The court is only interested in the best way of life for the child and not petty squabbles between the parents.

Well first of all I am in the UK and I don't know where you are.
Now if you go for a double barrel name if you put yours first, he will by you in records, IE medical. But they may try to drop one of them in school, and its usually the first, so watch out what you decide, or just keep tabs on it Like I did.
I Had both of our names put on, But wish I hadn't, I couldn't change it without his permission, but after he has had no contact for 2 years I no longer needed it. (However I left the double barrel)
Just ring up and ask in the UK its the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Or the USA equivalent.
Good luck, But I do hope he keeps in touch with his son, I have seen the pain of false promises.
Just remember Never bad talk the farther no matter what happens between you. Just be their for your son and put all of your energy into helping him grow up.
Mine is 16 now and I am a very proud parent.

HELLS NO, AS THE BIOLOGICAL MOTHER AND SPECIALLY THE FACT THAT YOU WERENT MARRIED WHEN YOU CONCEIVE THE CHILD YOU AUTOMATICLY HAVE SOMETHING CALLED SOLE CUSTODY OF THE CHILD.. HE HAS RIGHTS TOO, THE RIGHTS TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT, SO IF YOU WORRY ABOUT HIM TAKING YOUR CHILD BECAUSE THE CHILD HAS HIS NAME DON'T BE... THE ONLY WAY HE CAN TAKE THAT CHILD IS IF HE HAS PROOF AND I MEAN NO HEAR SAY PROOF OF YOU BEING A DEAD BEAT PARENT.. HE HAS THE RIGHT THEN TO GO TO COURT AND ASK FOR CUSTODY.. EVEN IF THE BABY HAS YOUR NAME, HE HAS THAT RIGHT BECAUSE ALL HE HAS TO DO IS GO TO COURT AND ESTABLISH PATERNITY FOR THE CHILD AND IF CAN PROOF THAT YOUR NOT FIT, HE WILL GET HIS CHILD.. SO IF YOUR A GOOD MOM AND HE GOT NOTHING ON YOU HE IS SCREW AND THE FACT THAT THE BABY HAS HIS NAME MAKES IT MORE EASY FOR YOU TO COLLECT CHILD SUPPORT.

No expert so cannot say about actual changing the birth certificate. However I live in Scotland and legally you can choose to be called and known under any name you. This was told to my by a solicitor. Unsure if it's the same in every country.

Sure does and he has the right to pay child support also you cannot change the name without going through the court, and then he would have to agree.
