Because we take them for granted and believe that they are always going to be there. We are so stupid as to think that because they do love us they will continue to take the hurt and abuse that we throw at them. It was said once that love is like a weed. Difficult to get rid of but if you try hard enough, you can kill it.

What you're saying is kind of a contradiction. If we love someone, we're trying to make them happy, there's no way we could hurt them, unless by accident, or if they choose to feel hurt.. If you're motivation and determination are to help them find happiness, without regard to self attachment, then you have nothing to worry about..
