Many local libraries and town halls have special bins to place used batteries. I would check both those places.

Both in the UK and the USA most public libraries and public (municipal) buildings have a collection box or bin. You should telephone ahead and inquire as to the location and the hours these public facilities are open.

as long as its not a CAR one, just put them in the bin. i dont think a couple of AA's is going to melt the ice cap ! if thats all you have to worry about today your having a good day.

Your local council will be able to tell you where your nearest recycling point is. They dispose of them for you!
