I'm considering upgrading to a 50 in. DLP HDTV from my 32 in. old school set, and currently have Dish Network.

Because the current HD promming is limited and costly, I'm not sure I want to pop for the HD programming. Is it worth getting the new TV based on the regular broadcast quality of Dish? The TV I'm looking at is a Samsung with 1920 x 1080p capability.

Thanks for your help.

I think everyone missed the point talking about over the air stuff. Anyway, if the only reason you are upgrading is because you want a better picture, I would say no don't do it, because you are not going to get a lot better picture without having the HD programming. If your TV is going out and you have to buy a new one, I would say of course go for the HD so that you don't get left behind, but don't go out and spend money on an HDTV to replace a good working TV, unless you are also willing to spring for the HD programming.

If the new TV will have a built in HDTV Tuner that broadcasts in ATSC you will be all set for 2009 when the standard is switching. It is a good idea to buy a HDTV as long as it is HD make sure it supports at least 1080p for the best picture. Its worth the money. IF the TV you are buying has a built in Tuner you can always recieve your local channels in HD for FREE. Dish Network has a lot of channels in HD and for the cost is actually a pretty good deal compared to DirecTv which I have.

If you only watch shows from satellite or cable and do not upgrade to HD programming then you might be wasting money. If you watch a lot of DVD's then the HDTV will be worth it but it comes with a string attached. You will get so spoiled at the improved picture viewing experience that you will most likely go on and get the HD programing. This happened to me. Directv HD receiver is only $99 and $10 per month additional to your plan. I would expect Dish prices are similar.

if your tv have a integrated tuner you still can pick up local off air hd programing from your local tv stations, depending on which of your local tv stations that broadcast in hd.as far as how it will look on standard dish channels,i can only say that it dont look good at all,it even looks better on a regular tv.dish network can make it look better but they choose not to.

Can you get any HD signals over the air? Because if you can, you don't have to pay for those stations.

I think it may be better to hold off though. After all, the technology will only get cheaper and better.
