What is the purpose of having elections to send carpetbagging, lying, coniving, "on-the-take", criminals to places like State Capitols and Washington D.C. to become even more corrupt in the guise of being 'representative' of their constituents? I am thoroughly disgusted with the whole lot of them and would like to know, what can I do about it?

We now have a bunch of crooks and do nothings in Washington. It is important to have a new election to put into office a new collection of crooks and do-nothings. We need new faces and names to throw mud at. Why is it that about 95% of all politicians are worthless? Some of these people were honest and actually made an attempt to help the country instead of throwing mud at their opponents and not passing any viable laws.
I suppose that the honest ones get caught up in the Washington merry go-round and become as useless as their associates.

The purpose of elections is to give a false sense of empowerment. That so-called "voice of the people" is little more than that a voice. Only when the voice reflects the predestined outcomes of the elections do we see the person we elected in office.

Take for example the 2000 and 2004 presidential.

Do what I do -- stay home on election day. I used to vote ... quite regularly. But I kicked the habit and gave up voting ... sort of like quitting smoking.

I have a different reason than you for why I see no point in having elections.

Nothing, we are sadly powerless in this mass game of deception.

here is a phrase sure to make your blood boil that i hear used all to often to describe the politicians who rule us:

Public Servants

I just love hearing about the arduous sacrifices of the public servants.

Makes me want to puke.

I agree with you. It doesn't matter who gets the most votes, but it does matter who has the most money.
