Beefeater aka Berni Inns

Twenty-two years ago, the first Beefeater Restaurant opened its doors to the public. Situated in Enfield, Middlesex, the Halfway House was designed as a traditional English steak house and this was reflected in a menu which, while offering a couple of fish and poultry dishes, revolved almost entirely around steaks.

Within a few months of opening, the Halfway House was welcoming over 1,000 customers each week. Steak was the key to the restaurant’s success, with the most popular choice being Prawn Cocktail (37p) for the starter, Rump Steak served with peas and French fries (£1.68) for the main course followed by Black Forest Gateau (50p) for dessert. The wine was usually chilled Langenbach Liebfraumilch (£l.90 per bottle) -all of which cost just over £3.00 the equivalent of £3.50 today, for which price a customer can still enjoy a meal at a Beefeater albeit with many more adventurous choices on offer.

Since that date, the growth of both the organisation and its menu offering has been meteoric. By May 1982, Beefeater boasted over 100 outlets. By 1988, the number had swollen to 200, and in November 1990 the Whitbread acquisition of Berni Inns brought a further 55 prime sites into the Beefeater portfolio. Today, Beefeater Restaurant & Pub has 293 outlets nation-wide, making it the largest operator of restaurants in the UK.

Beef-based meals - including steaks - now only’ represent a third of the menu choice. Capitalising on current eating trends such as world wide ethnic influences, vegetarianism and healthy eating, the Beefeater menu is extensive and caters for all tastes.

The most natural and healthy diet for humans is an omnivorous diet, and not a plant based diet, or a meat-based diet per se. The Paleo Diet can be very widely varied and omnivorous for the most part, but the most important thing is that it’s unprocessed, and avoids the worst foods that agriculture brought mankind… refined inflammatory vegetable oils, refined grains (some are worse than others), and sugar! As you can see, the benefits of adopting a Paleo way of eating can be incredible! I’ve been eating 95% Paleo for the last 5-6 years and I’ve never felt better. I have dozens of friends that have adopted a more Paleo way of eating too, and have seen all sorts of health problems disappear, including eliminating acne and other skin problems, digestion problems, improving brain clarity, and of course, losing a lot of body fat!
