They are synonyms but in certain expressions they take a slightly different meaning.

That's a pretty subtle difference. To me, using 'talk' sounds like a conversation, whereas 'speak' sounds like one person talking while others listen. For example:

"They talked for hours" brings to my mind two people chatting over coffee, or friends catching up with each other. "They spoke for hours" sounds like a series of people getting up, one after another, maybe giving speeches or preaching.

'Talk' is a little more informal, 'speak' a bit more formal. You can use one in place of the other pretty much all the time, though.

You talk to your friends and you speak in English. A lecturer might speak to his audience.
The differences are very subtle and whichever word you used there would be no doubt about what you were saying.

To talk is to make sounds - it may be intelligible or sometimes just gibberish.
To speak is to convey something in an intelligible manner - using a language that people understand.
