A "1X zoom factor" has no zoom affect at all. It is the lenses focal length.

If you're looking for what's the difference between 28mm zoom and 105mm zoom the easy rule of thumb is the lower the number the wider and further away things appear and vice versa.

A zoom lens set to 50-55mm is very similar to what the naked eye sees. Most landscapes are shot using 28mm (typically) perspective, most portraits are in the 80-100mm range (very flattering to the face), most macro (up-close) is at 100-105mm, and all those sports photographers on the sideline at the Super Bowl will be shooting telephoto lenses anywhere between 500-1000mm.

The "X" factor you refer to is a multiplier that the camera uses for zoom purposes. A camera with a 35mm optical lens and "3X Optical Zoom / 5X Digital Zoom" will in effect zoom in from 35-105mm optically (using the lens) and 35-175mm digitally (using the cameras processor).

The difference between optical and digital zoom is significant. Better quality point and shoots will give you higher optical zoom since it is of better quality and provides sharper, clearer shots. Digital zoom is cheaper, of less quality, and provides grainier pictures.

Hope this is what you were asking.
