Historically, firefox was a lot safer, more customisable, had more features and was faster than internet explorer. It also allowed people a choice in how they accessed the internet instead of relying on one vendor (i.e. Microsoft).

It is a very good browser, it renders (displays) pages quickly, is more customisable in its look (skins), has some cool plugins or gadgets and works very well with Windows XP (my only experience) but also Linux (most linux users I know rate it). Developers at work also prefer it because of its de-bugging capabilities.

Since IE7 though (the most recent browser from MS) there is less of a gap between the features available in both and, personally, IE is faster than Firefox on my system.

You should also try Opera as another answer suggested which also does excellent browsers for use on mobile phones.

The best thing to do is to install the alternatives and try them out. Both Opera and Firefox are safe and reliable.

Firefox is so good that the latest version of Internet explorer (7) is a copy of it.
Tabbed browsing has been a part of firefox for years and has only just been put into Internet Explorer.
Firefox is 'open source' which means that the basic code of the browser is available for anyone to look at, this means that all those tech heads out there are playing about with it, and releasing all kinds of add on's all the time. This can be from changing the 'skin' or the way it looks, to adding news tickers, stock market tickers, search for torrents, music downloads all within the same browser. The choice is almost endless and its all free! you can also download an e mail client software called thunderbird which acts similar to how outlook express in windows interacts with Internet explorer.

Internet Explorer is closed source, so any add on has to come from Microsoft. Internet explorer is also the favourite target of hackers and virus's, because it always seems to have flaws that can be attacked.

Firefox is a great (free) browser, it offers things like extensions that other people have written to enhance firefox. Also it offers features as default that you can get with Internet Explorer (but have to install third party extensions to get the same kind of functionality). The other great thing is firefox can be installed and run directly off a usb pen drive(!) - try doing that with Internet Explorer!! lol

I personally run both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Unfortunately most sites are optimised to run on Internet Explorer only, so you may find certain sites (like some banking sites) will only work properly on Internet Explorer and not Firefox.

I would suggest you download firefox and try it. You can have both Firefox and Internet Explorer installed at the same time, they dont conflict with each other and you can set either one to be the default browser.

You can even use both Internet Explorer and Firefox simultaneously at the same time running side by side (which often happens when Im running Firefox and I come across a site that needs to run in Internet Explorer so I open Internet Explorer as well, but keep Firefox open as I still want to browse other sites with it.

Internet Explorer and firefox are both great browsers, everyone should try both. I find Opera (another free browser is slightly faster than either Internet Explorer or Firefox, but I like the features of IE and Firefox better.

A lot of people may mention firefox is safer - but you can just as easily download a virus/trojan/malware from firefox than you can with Internet Explorer - although Internet Explorer specific attacks are far more common.

Hope this helps

It's an alternative to Internet Explorer as a web browser. It is slightly safer as it doesn't allow use of ActiveX components but still offers pretty much the same (and in some cases better) experience.

Additionally Firefox has some pretty nifty optional features and is even skinable. More information at http://getfirefox.com

If you're interested in Firefox you might want to check out other alternative browsers such as Opera.

No big deal, just common sense:
- comes in free, updates thoroughly following technical evolutions,
- excellent coding, small number of bugs that are corrected quite fast,
- good performance with respect to speed,
- easy customization, and availability of smart plug-ins,
- no security issues, as the source code can be obtained and reviewed.

You only need to do a search on here to see how many people are having problems with IE7. Mozilla Firefox available from http://www.mozilla.com/ Its faster, more user friendly, easily customisable to suit your needs and no problems.

Open source software, tabbed browsing, extensions, add-ons, skins, changeable icons, automatic pop-up blocking, conforms to W3C web standards, more secure, faster, integrated RSS feed reader ... that's just off the top of my head.

Been doing a PC? You need to get out more.
