It should work the same as a pregnancy does. You must advise your boss in a timely manner, but not too soon. Adoption takes time, and there are no guarantees as you may or may not know. If you know a "round about date" of your placement, I would share that with your boss approximately 30 days in advance. That way, you have time to train someone to fill in for you in your absence. Read your company manual, there may be clauses in it pertaining to maternity leave. There are no guarantees that you will not be replaced permanently in some situations, hopefully, your company will see your value,and honor your adoption maternity leave the same as a pregnancy, but make sure you are prepared!

The new laws just passed by the government means that you are entitled to normal maternity leave, 39 weeks. You need to tell them at least 4 weeks prior to wanting to take the leave.

you would get accurate information from an adoption agency they will be able to keep you right.
