I read somewhere about a Jewish sect that taught this, but I need a name to be able to write about it.

I am not at liberty say, but atheism is the religion of the non-believer.

If you look at ancient Jewish writings then there is little concrete information on the concept of an afterlife. There is very little explicit information (e.g. look at the Old Testament) so it is quite possible that there were Jews who did not believe in an afterlife. Simply a lack of evidence either way.

Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in a so called after life but they also do not believe death is the end. When we die as someone has previously mentioned we simply cease to exist. However this state of non-existence is only temporary as God has promised to resurrect those in the grave to everlasting life on earth. (John 5:28,29).
I hope this makes sense and answers your question.

I heard that a Mr. John was once asked to fill up a form to tell about his identity. He starred at the blank space where he was supposed to put down his religion; he tought for a while and he worte down "football".

Thus, jokingly, football can be a religion that does not believe in a life after death.

Jehovah's witnesses believe that when someone dies, they simply cease to exist. However, they see from the bible that the hope of a resurrection to life on Earth is open to most of those who have ided. John chapter 11 is a particularly noteworthy account in this regard.

Religion which does not believe in a life after death is definitely a false religion. All the religions established by the Messengers of the One True God teach about the eternal existence of the living God and of the human living souls.

Scientologists believe that we don't actually die but that our true selves move from body to body and never actually experience "death". They believe we're all "thetans" which is something similar to "souls". They believe that our mind and our body are not really "us" and that our "real" selves, so to speak, exist eternally.

So... in that sense, they don't believe "we" ever really die... so technically they don't believe in life after death since the death of our bodies and minds never actually kill our "real" selves.

Of course, Scientology isn't really a religion so I'm not sure if this actually counts. After all, atheism isn't a religion so all the people answering with "atheism" are wrong. Depending on whether YOU consider Scientology a cult determines whether you consider my answer relevant.

Shintoism is very vague on the afterlife, hence funerals are usually Buddhist in Japan. I wouldn't say that Shintoism has no belief in an afterlife whatsoever though.
