I thought it was just an empty shopping cart, so when I took it this black lady came up to me yelling. Apparently, it was her cart she just hadn't put any merchandise in it yet. So, ok I just gave it back and said sorry. But as she pushed the cart away she snapped back at me "You better recognize, umm-hmm!"

What exactly does this mean? (I am a non-ebonics speaker)

I think she meant '' You had better realize its my trolley, now clear off and get your own one.'' A very rude response from her considering you were v. polite. Don't take it personally, Im sure you weren't the first person to feel her wrath that day. Some people just have too much bad attitude.

I'm assuming you are white (so am I). She probably thinks you did it because she was black. If not, she's just being weird. That happened to me once (but it was a white woman who got mad at me). She was standing right by the front of the grocery store where some people leave their carts. She was looking at some cards and the empty cart was sitting around the corner of the card stand. Keep in mind, there were no carts available inthe area of the store where they usually keep them. I guess the high schoolers and meth addicts who work there were taking it easy that day. Plus, it was a busy shopping day at the only grocery store in town (very small town), so the rest of the cars may have just been taken. When I took the cart, she gave me this huffy "uhhh?!?!" like a toddler. I just apologized and said I thought it was just left there by someone. She still gave me a dirtly look. Oh well. Some people just need to grow up. If they get that bent about someone taking an empty shopping cart when they aren't paying attention to it, just think how mad they get when someone intentionally does something really wrong to them.

She was trying to tell you in her own way that she isn't about to be taken advantage of by some white man. Some people would have said, "I don't even think so!" Or here's an idea... go get a cart from the area where the store stacks hundreds of them, rather than being lazy and taking the first one you see on the sales floor.

I'm a non-Ebonics speaker, myself, but I know a few phrases. And, I think this one is pronounced, "You better rek-a-nize."
