It depends on what type of visa you want.

You can travel to Canada without a visa if you're a British passport, and stay as a tourist for a few months (up to 6 months, I believe).

If you intend to work, study, or immigrate permanently then you have to apply, pay the fee, and wait in line like everyone else (with the backlog, the waiting time is about 3 or 4 years).
Go to www.cic.gc.ca for more info.

Hi It depends on how long you want to go for.I went to Canada last year and I had to go through immigration. If you want to stay for a long time even if you work you have to have 10000$ Canadian dollars on your bank account. if you don't you wont be accepted. If you go on holiday they will do the visa when you go through immigration. Be prepared they will ask lots of questions like how much money you have or where you are going or what you are doing in Canada. Hope this helps you. Before you go check to make sure you don't need one of the new electronic passport!!!! this is very important
