This was what the recipe said. Should I decrease the temp. and increase the time or increase the temp and decrease the time.

Usually temperature and time for making are given for sea level locations.

If you live in an area above sea level, usually you should decrease the heat to about 170 - 175 and increase the time. Check if the cake is done by inserting a wooden pick in the middle of it. If it is done the pick should come out dry.

I think that was an excellent attempt. That is what boiled fruit cake should be like. Give yourself a pat on the back!!!!

Me, last time I made a cake it was an industrial sized carrot cake and all went well until I brought it out of the oven and it was an odd colour - I had grated the carrrots and forgot to put them in!!!!

just let it sit for a while. usually things set when they have cooled down.
