It was called that, because it appears later in life, after the person is supposed to have arrived at the age of wisdom, 18 years.

They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so late—much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are arguably wiser than as a child, when the other teeth erupt. The English wisdom tooth is derived from Latin dens sapientiae. The same root is shared by the following languages

this has nothing to do with wisdom or your age as people i know hve already had theirs out at a very early age, as for me i stil have had none out, and nothing wrong with my teeth as i look after them, and im almost 30, so age wisdom its all crap, they can come through when ever they like

basically, the layman's term "wisdom tooth" is anatomically known as third molar. according to the sequence of eruption, third molar normally erputs at the age of 18-21 years old, whicch is the last tooth to erupt in an adult permanent dentition. at that age of maturity (consider it 18-21 y/o), thats when our wisdom (i think it depends on a person..Ü) showers us..

If you are able to keep them, you have great wisdom bestowed upon you. I still have mine and am much wiser than someone my age without them.

Because you are supposed to be an adult before they start bothering you. And back before dentists were anything more than masacists, that is how they made you feel better when "your wisdom teeth" started hurting you. Pre-pain killer term.
