Actually, the previous poster is very close. Press F8 during bootup, choose "Command prompt only" instead of safe mode, and when the C: prompt appears, type scandisk and hit enter. It's got a much greater chance of completing from DOS, without any of windows loaded.

After it's done, just reboot your computer with Ctrl-Alt-Del.

It's quite possible your hard disk may be going bad, which is understandable if the machine is old enough to still be running Win98. Still, let scandisk try and correct it first.
