i dont want him to go 'front line'
He wont consider any other service.. would you recommend a marine career??

Do i back him, or do i try to talk him out of it????
im married to a sailor, so our son knows about some aspects of service life....

Yes I would recommend a Marine career. We Marines believe in leadership and honor. No other service have the kind of kinship that we Marines have. No matter where a Marine goes, he or she know that they are apart of a brother or sister hood. Marines is the only branch that has a saying. Once a Marine always Marine and we take care of our own. No matter what branch he will serve he will always be in danger if he ever goes to war. But not everyone can be Marines, its a title that is earn. Marines have a longer boot camp both for enlisted and officers. Marines even train the naval officers at their boot camp.
But honestly it comes down to this...once he's 18, he's a man, if that's his choice you have to respect that.

When your son returns from boot camp..... he wont ever be the same person he was before. That is the problem with the Marines, they change people. Glorious though it is.
If he wants glory tell him to go Army. But even the Airforce has a combat rate. Its called the Security Forces and they fight in Iraq too, they are also Infantry, and they are air force so they get better treatment.
Even the Navy has its combat arms. Actually any person can go to Iraq, all they do is send the Sailor ro a 4 week course and he gets sent to Iraq to fight.
All Branches have thier diffrent combat arms. Hes 16. He has 2 more years to think about it. Don't sign his papers for him though, cause if you do, and he go's and doesnt like the military he's gonna be like "why did you sign it ma?" so make him wait till hes 18. Itll give him time to look at the diffrent choices

I speak as a parent with a son who is about to ship out to Air Force boot camp, and as a former US Marine. To be quite blunt HELL NO! The Marines (Royal and US) are always at the tip of the spear. They bear the brunt of the fighting and there is NOTHING honorable and glamorous about getting shot, blown up, dismembered and scarred mentally and physically for life.
I suggest you go to the site below and find some of the gruesome war footage and let him take a long close look and then tell you how glamorous he thinks it is.

No. The marines are a bunch of brutish dummies. If he wants to be a real hero, he might try being a cop or FBI agent, although I must say that cops and FBI agents also have very hazardous jobs.
Military jobs are not at all glamorous. My four years in the Army were boring. And we sure did waste an awful lot of tax dollars.
When he leaves the military, he will find that he gets far less respect than he had ever bargained for. If he's dead set on wasting four years of a life that may well end soon, then I say go for it!

Are you out of your mind? what is wrong with you anyway? do you know how many soldiers,sailors, marines, air force are paramedics, logistics, communications, engineering, cooks etc with no limbs, missing eyes, ears, etc etc in Walter Reed Army Medical Center? Do you know that most soldiers injured were not even in the front line? do you know that here in Iraq the front line is everywhere, men wake up take your head out of the sand.

You cannot be a marine without being on the front lines of some conflict around the world. This is what a marine does, fight.

Have him finish school first then he can choose anything he wants to do. Any branch of the military can be a good career. Most of the people who enter thinking it is going to be glamorous usually get out after their first tour of duty.
My son is currently in the ARMY ROTC program. The only qualification I put on him was to go to college before he joined any branch.

Right, honestly tell him to wait until hes 19 or 20.I would also recommend a career in the royal marines if thats what you mean.Its alot different from the army.

I would reccomend steering him towards one of those careers that way he still gets to play with guns during training and serves his country but avoids front-line combat.
However it is still dangerous so you might want to see what his other interests are to see if anything else might tempt him.

Support him, if he's ot good enough they will tell him pretty quick and if it's what he wants to do he will probably do it anyway. The British marines are one of the best fighting forces in the world and he will be in good hands.
