I actually visited Hong Kong last year on a British passport. British citizens travelling on British passports may stay in Hong Kong without a visa for upto 180 days. However, if you leave Hong Kong for a day and then return, you are granted another 180 days. I know this as, upon returning on the ferry from a day trip to Macau, for which British passport holders also do not need a visa, my 180-day visa-free period was restarted.

I believe stays less then 48 hours don't need a visa but i had to get one for a three day stop over in shanghai so you will need one if your staying longer then the 48 hr rule, best if you check at the web site for the Chinese embassy. if you are going to get one and don't live near the embassy or consulate there are visa service agents you can send your passport to by reg post and they will have it back to you within the week. the cues inside the embassy can be long and their not open for too long

I went back in 1999 for 4 days and I didn't need one. I didn't have to prove I had sufficient funds either but maybe that's changed.
