I'm a Nikon guy ..... (D200), the D40 is a great starter camera or you could get a D70 they are heavily discounted now.
Check out www.dpreview.com for camera reviews.
The Nikon and Canon DSLR's are the industry leaders.

I am a Nikon girl, so I think a D40 would be fine. If you can swing it, a D50 or D70s would be a great alternative.

The kit lens is fine to start with. You can decide later on a better lens to fit your style of photography.

Unless you're a "Nikon guy", I would suggest Canon EOS Digital Rebel. You can take your pick among XT (350D) and XTi(400D) . XTi being the latest one.

Here is a nice review of XT: http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/digital_rebel_xt/

Couldn't find one for XTi on photo.net. You'll find lots on the net as such but I haven't read a review on it yet so I won't give the link.

Lastly, if you're not really serious I would suggest find a decent second/refurb of Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D), it might be tough to find as it's discontinued but it would be worth the price.

All the best...
