At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The amount of it produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.

I think it has something to do with a slower metabolism. When you're young you burn calories off faster and probably use your brain more what with school and homework, etc. Older people aren't as active nor are they using their brains as much. By that i mean they aren't spending most of the day in school and on homework, etc. So it makes sense that teens and young adults need more sleep. Of course this is just my opinion.
