Not often (my dentist says)...but it's happened to me twice! I had a root canal and a crown done on one tooth. It became abscessed after about a year. Had to have the tooth and crown pulled...and a bridge installed. Total cost...around $4,000.00.

I have another root canal/crown tooth doing the same thing right now. This time they want to "retreat" (re-do) the root canal and then I'll have to have another crown made...another $2,000.00

It's unbelievable...and expensive.

It's not very common. I've had 4 root canals over the past 17 years and all have lasted.

root canal is the only way to save your tooth after certain decay stage.it is only giving nature a second chance, the bad part of any treatment is these days results are only predictable but not guaranteed BUT DEFINITELY IN THE HANDS OF ROOT CANAL SPECIALIST 90% OR MORE SUCCESS IS ACHIEVED
now looking at the choice of rct vs extraction.
extraction is a quick fix to the pain but you are losing the TOOTH FOR EVER , NO-ONE ON EARTH CAN GET IT BACK.
replacement is more expensive,so IF YOU CAN AFFORD go for rct even if it troubles it can be pulled out later ,OTHERWISE GET IT PULLED OUT right away

It depends on the dentist, I'm thinking. Having been a military member then the spouse of one, we have moved around so often and I have had to change dentists a lot with every move. I had one dentist in VA who was so bad, everything he did in my mouth was a waste off money. I changed dentists after I lost some expensive dental work he had done. Too bad their work doesn't come with a money-back guarantee or at the very least, a short warranty!

I have two root canals...... they provided me with such relief from chronic dental pain that when it was all said and done I coined the phrase, "root canals are for everybody!" That was almost 10 years ago. I wouldn't change a thing!!
