Your soul is you. God created Adam out of dust and breathe into his nostrils and Adam became a living soul.

soul (atma) is what you are. the body is the covering. the soul has evolved like species evolve the soul is the real you and it knows everything. if you believe in the theory of karma and rebirth then you would be knowing that the soul has passed through all forms of life to reach the human form. from here the final passing is to merge with god( paramatama).
the final journey will depend on the manner in which you conduct yourself in this life and whether you have learned your lessons before you can ascend. in case you have not then you keep coming back till you do.

you can compare the soul to a planet. the planets are nothing but the fragments of the sun and their ultimate destination is to merge with the sun. similarly the soul is a part of the greater soul or you can say the soul is like a small energy which is the part of the bigger energy source into which it has to ultimately merge.

We do not know. Religious groups claim to know but they don't. The SOUL. the essence that is you (????) words that defy definition. Given time science will provide an answer. Here's a transcendental situation. Star Trek. The beam me up Scotty thing. In theory we can map any body's DNA and assuming we have a teleporter machine we can transfer humans from A to B.
The question that rises is What Happens to the Soul??

We are lead to believe that this soul is eternal saved or unsaved it is eternal-paradise or hell- and yet in the brief moment of it's existence in a human body(in Christianity animals are soulless) it can affect it's eternal existence. How irrational is that??

The soul, according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is a self-aware ethereal substance particular to a unique living being. In these traditions the soul is thought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sentience. In distinction to spirit which may or may not be eternal, souls are usually (but not always as explained below) considered to be immortal and to exist before their incarnation in flesh.

The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what may happen to the soul after the death of the body. Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as immaterial, while others consider it to possibly have a material component, and some have even tried to establish the mass (weight) of the soul.

The animating and vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as an immaterial entity.
soul (n.) The spiritual nature of humans, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state.
soul (n.) The disembodied spirit of a dead human.

This is the body that is really you, and your connection to God or the Devil depending on who your daddy is.
Your spirit is the life inside your blood you received from you father(sperm), and orginally from Adam and Eve, and your Body was provided by your physical mother (egg) and developed inside your mother.
But the Soul of a man is his character, the things he did learn from life on the planet making a person who they are.
The Marriage between the Breath(spirit) and body actually creates the Soul of a man when a baby takes it's first breath; Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The Living soul was first created by God inside of Adam, so all of mankind fell with him, but God made a way back with a perfect Soul of God named Lord Jesus Christ ;John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
I have a good way to show you who your daddy is.
If you think with your brain Satan is your father
If you think with your heart then Jesus Christ is your father
Science has not proved which part actually does the thinking.
But many people would say the brain.
But the Bible says the heart.

Soul is the true and spiritual man who expresses his existence through the instrumentality of the body. After enjoying the training and pleasures in this physical world, he returns to the One True God in the spiritual world to enjoy greater blessings depending on his spiritual development now and on the mercy of God. Although it is a great mystery, but he who concentrates on learning about his own self, he will realize his own spiritual reality.
