About half a pound a weeks is the most you should eat. The FDA says eating more than 30 pounds of fish per year isn't healthy.

These fish filets aren't as healthy as you think. While fish contains a lot protein and nutrients, the FDA says it also can harbor mercury, a dangerous toxin.

The FDA says pregnant women especially should limit the amount of fish in their diets, since the toxin can hurt brain development.

If you want to know which fish are ‘safe’ to eat and which to avoid, the website of the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is an excellent site.

We’re also being told that certain species of fish – cod, most notably – are on the brink of extinction because of over-fishing.

You probably took that statement out of context.
Fish is extremely healthy. Perhaps whoever told you that was saying that eating "nothing but" cod was poor eating habits.
