6 kids in a neon. A baby was in a car seat and the other kids were not (ages 2-9). The car was parked in the lot when the officer pulled up. The officer got out and started yelling at the parents that they got there somehow and the kids lives were in danger. He took both parents to the rear of the car and yelled at them for nearly 45 minutes telling them CPS should take the kids away, they were lousy parents, etc (while the kids were in the car crying and unattended). I was watching these poor kids crying and terrified and at one point the baby was crying so hard she looked like she was choking and the officer had the parents with thier backs to the kids yelling at them. Was this inappropriate?

What about if the baby

had actually choked while the officer had the parents distracted? Who would be responsible for that negligent homicide due to neglect?

It was at least 45 minutes because after awhile my friend went over to his partner (who was sitting in the squad car) and said something about it being inappropriate. A crowd of people in the parking lot were starting to gather asking each other "did they beat the kids or something?". The police supervisor arrived awhile later at my friends request and he was still carrying on when the supervisor arrived (and she witnessed him carrying on). She said "I can't condemn his message, but I can speak to him about his delivery".

Kevin - I was assuming about the ages, much like you were about things. How come it simply can't be the officer had a bad day and was acting out of line? Why defend him. I understand he's human too.

Also, for being in law enforcement for a long time, you need to read up on what negligent homicide means. It has nothing to do with driving. It means "negligently causing the death of another". The parent who left her toddler alone in the bathtub (and he drowns) can be convicted of negligent homicide. At least get it right if you are going to represent law enforcement opinion.

I think I agree with the supervisor - his delivery may not have been right, but his message was dead on! How dare those parents take it upon themselves torisk their childs lives by not having them safely buckled in the car!

If ya can't feed 'em, don't breed 'em - and that goes for all the other things involved with parenting. If you can't provide safe means of transportation then don't put your kids in the car!

I witnessed an accident on the highway one time - Baby and two year old killed, mom and dad walked away without so much as a scratch. Baby and two year old were ejected because they were not strapped in to car seats. The police officer was trying to prevent this scenario from happening X 6 with these pathetic excuse for parents!

Maybe the officer has had to clean up traffic accidents where a child was used as an airbag (sitting restrained or unrestrained on parents lap) or was ejected from a vehicle.

As far as the parents being five feet way? Gimme a friggen break. Do you watch your children every minute of the day never letting them out of your sight? No? Thats what I thought.

It is frightening how many people out there that are reproducing when they really shouldn't be. They should give an IQ test AND a common sense test to prospective parents. Cuz common sense ISNT common and IQ's don't seem to be very high on the folks I have dealt with on traffic stops. I have seen the baby airbag numerous times and all everyone does is point the finger at the cop.

Open your eyes folks and use that thing inside your skull. You folks don't see what horrors we see everyday. Dead children on the side of the road from a car accident makes you feel REALLY strong about safety belt use, especially when you have kids at home.

And I HIGHLY doubt we are getting the whole story here. You know WAY too much about how old the kids were....I bet the officer saw them pull into the lot but couldn't get a stop on them until they were already parked.....or YOU are the one that was being chastized.

By the way..negligent homicide only appliles if someone dies as a result of something you did while operating a vehicle.

Your an Idiot! plain and simple... None of us were there... Did you see the kids? Where they all properly secured in the veh the way their supposed to? Are you a Peace Officer? Do you live the life? Do you see accidents where the whole family dies due to too many people in the vehicle that are not supposed to be there not wearing their seat belt or not having a child on a child car seat? I don't think you see that in your everyday life at your job.

Inappropriate for you might not be the same in the eyes of someone else, wether the officer did right or wrong, no one here can answer that for you because none of us were there, and none of us are the officer that was involved in that situation, and I bet you yourself don't even know what was going on with those people, for all you know they were invoved in a sexual act or smoking dope in the vehicle.

No, because it was apparent the parents had driven the car without the necessary safety seats for the children. What if they had an accident and the children were killed because of negligent controls? The officer was doing his duty and should be commended for what he did. He had the children's welfare at heart. Why didn't the parents have safety seats for the younger children? I would have given them a ticket, but would have it voided out if the parents got seats within a 7-day period.

Totally inappropriate. He obviously could see the upset children and he did not need both parents behind the car, only the DRIVER. If he wanted to lecture both parents, so be it. But when he saw the hysterical kids he could have let one parent go calm them down. What did he end up doing?

The first time You have to go to the scene of an accident and You find a dead infant lying in the tall grass along a roadside, you'll realize how appropriate it really was. I hope the adults listen to him. Better the Officer got them than me!!!

yes and no, obvioulsy a preant himself he was pissed and got too upset. he should have let one parent tend to the children while he scolded each parent individually. He should also contact cps anyway to make them aware of the situation. I don't understand if they cant afford a bigger car, and car seats, then maybe only one parents needs to go to the sotre or wherever and the other stay home with the kids...ugh i hate people that do that crap!

Maybe this cop has recently had the pleasure of helping to pick up the bodies of some dead kids off of the street, because their parents didn't have them properly restrained. Anybody who hasn't done so lately, should consider how this might alter one's perspective. I'm sure he'd rather piss off some parents than have to see another dead kid.

I have to agree with the police officer's supervisor --- the message was correct, but the delivery was wrong.
