I love Korean movies.. I think Korean guys are HOT.. I thought Korean people are so polite n friendly (based on the movie anyway).
But I've met quite a lot of Korean people lately.. and I'm not sure if they are rude or their culture like that, but they very unfriendly.. they don't talk much, and I try to be really friendly with them, but they seem to hold back and don't bother about other people.

My Singaporean friends are agree with me, they thought that Korean people only want to hang around with their own people.

is there any reason for that??? or it's just part of your culture???

Koreans have become very nationalistic. They are encouraged to socialize with each other more than with people of other nationalities.

Many believe Koreans have "pure blood." As a result some will date, but never marry someone from another culture. They don't have a tradition of hospitality. Even though I've invited Korean friends to my home, they won't invite me to theirs.

I am Americn; my wife is Korean. Many of my relatives in Korea are reluctant to speak English, even though they understand quite well, to prevent making a mistake. Koreans are typically very reserved and wait for the other party to make the first social move. Koreans can be very friendly once they get to know you. Of course, the ones you have met may just be rude. Don't generalize too much. Also, many Koreans are workaholics and are just tired at the end of the day.

I'm foreigner living in Korea, hopefully can answer your question..
Korean people are basically shy and especially proud of their nation and races. They are afraid if they are being unfriendly or accidentally insult others, they will have bad image about Korea and Koreans.
Korean people (if you are referring to more suburban area (not Seoul) and are more adult people) they are friendly and they appreciate foreigner more. They are not talking much because they are basically shy (i say that again) about their English. I have lots of Korean friends even though I cannot speak their language they are trying their best to talk with me with limited English. So I dont really believe that they are unfriendly. Younger generations are more indifferent so maybe this is your case.
But most Koreans are friendly and more open to friends once you understand their culture...
oh, and one more thing, they're respecting seniority very much (their culture are based on Confucianism) so once you made mistake by saying some words that they are considering unappropriate, they might have bad image about you...
hope I helped...

I'm a Korean (male).
While it's true that most Koreans are nationalistic,
the idea does not interfere with socializing with other people.

In other words, most of Koreans including myself do not really care very much about where someone comes from.
If you want to socialize with them, try saying a few easy phrases that will catch their attention, such as

Bob muh-guh-ssuh= How have you been doing?
(literally this phrase means "Have you had your meal?" but Koreans use it to start a conversation, usually)

And try going to a local Korean restaurant with them.
That will probably help you :D
