Find someone nonjudgmental to talk to and explain to him/her why are you depressed.
This is simple, but it works.

There is nothing wrong with seeing a counselor. There should be a place in your community that will see you on a sliding-scale for what you can afford. A counselor is not a psychiatrist and might be able to help without giving you any medications.

If this depression is severe you need to see someone about it.
If it is life threating you need to call a crisis line.

If it is not that bad some good things to do are:
get up and get dressed no matter how you feel, eat well and regular no matter how you feel, get sunlight (if sunlight is not available sit in front of bright artificial light), contact your social support system even if you don't feel like being social, go for a walk/get out of the house, and do something that contributes to the greater good.

Also, there is a website that will mail you free pamphlets on any number of mental health issues including depression. It is free!
You might want to order one if you feel like you aren't ready to see a counselor just to check out the severity of your symptoms.

See..

Try to find cause of depression, it would help you.
I sometimes get depressed because of family problems...

This is the analysis phase.
Then try to involve yourself in the thing you like most to do.

For e.g., i loves playing games on computer.
Whenever i have sad phase, i just start playing and forgets whole world.
This helps me to temporarily recover myself.
You could do anything to recover yourself.

Talking to your friends or your loved ones is a good thing in this case....

But remember, if you are depressed very often now and then,

then better to be a bit more courageous and concern a psychologist.....

A depressed person couldn't be cured, until and unless his thoughts are changed.....

I can only tell you what worked for me. I read Antinomy by Spider Robinson. (if you can't find that, Melancholy Elephants is equally good). I kept re-reading it, for years, any time depression got it's grips on me.

It's not an unrealistically sweet book. It's not sweet at all, actually. It's more hard, crunchy and realistic. It doesn't have silly, unbelievable stories about incredibly lucky, happy people, with perfect endings and dumb messages about perfect worlds.

Instead, it

look, I can't explain it as well as Spider Robinson writes it. But if you have time to read it, I hope it helps in some small way. You are not alone.

good luck

You do your own SWOT (Strength,Weakness,Opportunity, and threat) analysis and do the following.
Increase the strengths.
Weaken the weaknesses.
Make use of the opportunities to your best advantage.
Face the threats squarely and liquidate them.
Share your feelings with your near and dear(kith and kin) and that will relieve your mood of depression
Discuss openly with your well wishers to get useful suggestions.
Take employment if you are unemployed.
Take some useful hobbies and social services to keep you usefully engaged.

Find someone to talk to and find an activity to get your mind off of yourself and your problems. Doing something for others helps, but also do something for yourself.
