Develop the triceps, that's the muscle along the back of your arm. Most people think the bicep is the source of strength, but that only applies to pulling. A punch is a push, so the opposite is true, large biceps can hinder your punching. Pushups will help you more then any other exercise.

Practice, practice, practice. Practice makes perfect is more then just a saying. Punch a lot and you'll punch well. Kick a lot and you'll kick well. In Shaolin they work at everything for at least an hour each time they work a skill. They practice punching and kicking every day. Punch the punching bags, use punching boards, punch your own hand if you must or even just the air, but practice punching every day.

everyone's answer only boils down to 2 things.

mentality must be right: "to punch faster u'll have to do just that"
practice must be done: different drills to develop ur arms

do the above 2 right to punch faster

a cheap way to effectively increase punch speed, go to any bicycle shop ask for a punctured tyre (not wheel), hold the tyre with it already around ur back ( like how u would wear a bra only that the "breast" is ur real back). adjust till the level of difficulty u prefer then start punching in sets. preferably 1 set 100 punches doing 5 sets with 30 sec breaks in between..

When I was a pilot I used to do an exercise to increase my reaction time: Rest a quarter on the back of your hand and hold it out in front of you. As quickly as you can, pull your hand straight back so the quarter remains suspended in the air, then reach forward and grab it before it falls. Sounds easy, but you'll be surprised at how often you slap it across the room.

do you watch TV? every time a scene changes throw a jab ... just a jab after when you get comfortable with your jab throw a straight this will increase your reflexes to punch faster you need to train for it triangle push-ups, negative weight lifting (instead of curling up curl down) etc... do that for a couple months and your training partners won't recognize you

Practice proper form

Perform explosive weight training...where, when you exhert your force you go as quickly as possible and return to the starting position in a slow controlled manner...this will get your fast twitch muscles going and in return will make you faster

use weights while hitting a punching bag as quickly as possible...this improves muscle reflex and power....or if you're looking JUST to be quicker but not as powerful leave your fist loose until the last instant and snap it at the end.

Practice on a speed bag to get your rhythm, speed and timing down. Rather then using a heavybag, try just shadow boxing to build up speed.

Aside from practicing which i'm sure you do, try throwing your punches with your arm relaxed until just before contact. It helped me.

Do push ups. Losts of them. Do push ups and at the top, push hard enough so that you can clap your hands and get them back down to catch your self. Do lots of them. Then work so you can clap twice withoug your face hitting the floor.

Do lots and lots and lots.
