You can stay in any hotels near the Metro if you don't have a car. Metro day pass is only $3. If you have a car, then it doesn't matter where you stay.
The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is in the center of Hollywood. It's located at 7000 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA. I saw it here. http://www.seeing-stars.com/Hotels/HollywoodRoosevelt.shtml

I don't know what type of budget you are working with but if it is feasible, I would stay at the Renaissance Hotel that is attached to Hollywood/Highland where the Kodak theater is located. Is an amazing hotel and you are right in the heart of the tourist area. It very safe there and you can easily access the subway to various parts of the city. My friend from Japan was very concerned about safety when visiting two months ago but she absolutely love the hotel and never felt the danger. As with any place you visit, stay informed of your local surroundings and don't stray too far from the tourist areas. Hollywood has cleaned up quite a bit and is not that dangerous anymore but there are areas that is not near the tourist areas that can be dangerous. Driving in LA is a pain with the traffic and parking situations so I recommend visiting our city using the subways which are very safe...just don't stay out too late. The Renaissance Hotel is part of the Marriott family. Welcome to LA and have a good time.

I lived in various hotels throughout LA for a year. If you want a place that's safe at night, then do NOT get a hotel in downtown LA (almost everything closes at 5pm, and lots of homeless people), or Santa Monica (again not much open late, and lots of homeless around). Either go to Hollywood or West Hollywood.
If you want bars, clubs, and restaurants, then go to West Hollywood. My favorite is the Wyndham Bel-age Hotel (San Vicente and Sunset Strip) - practically across the street from the Viper Room, Whiskey-a-go-go, and the original Hustler of Hollywood store. Great little restaurants - pizza, Greek, Japanese. Also, one of the best neighborhood bookstores I've ever visited (www.booksoup.com). The original Tower Records is there also (unfortunately they sold out recently).
Another hotel a few blocks down the road (and a little cheaper) is the Wyndham Summerfield Suites. You have to walk out of the residential area a few block to get to the action, but the price is a little cheaper.
If you like the House of Blues, then stay at the Hyatt of West Hollywood - it's just across the street. But there is little else to do in this area, and the walk to get to the Viper Room is too far (better off getting a cab).
Another safe night area with things to do is close to Mann's Chinese Theater. Either go to the Roosevelt Hotel or the Rennaissance Hotel. The Roosevelt is old and historical (I believe the Emmy's used to be presented there originally), and the Rennaisance is new and very modern. The Rennaisance is actually part of a shopping complex with clubs and restaurants, so you would not have to venture far from the hotel to do things at night.

I've stayed at the Hollywood Rosevelt ,it was great .I had my 2 children and were felt very safe.We traveled from Australia in Sept 06 and stayed at the mayfair in downtown LA. It was very unsafe and we had a terrible time there, room was disgraceful,we changed after 1 night but second room was not much better, hotel was disgusting and heaps of abusive homeless people outside the front door. This was the hotel recommended by Australian travel agents. If you don't have a car stay in hollywood.

It depends on the area which you want to explore. We had been to Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyland and California Adventure last year. We stayed in a hotel just across the theme parks.
You can check in there for a day then check out and go to Hollywood area.

i think the easiest and safest way is just to stay in a hyatt or mariott next to LAX and drive to hollywood , etc. It's worth experiencing the drive on the freeway and seeing what the southern california commute is like.
